How to Obtain an Elective Residence Permit in Italy?

Who doesn’t dream of relocating and living “la dolce vita” in Italy? This dream could become a reality with the Italian Elective Residence visa—an immigration program designed specifically for retirees and financially independent individuals.

Financially independent individuals and retirees with high self-sustaining incomes wishing to relocate to Italy can apply for a residence permit under the Elective Residence program. This program is particularly appealing to those planning to establish themselves in Italy for at least 12 months. One of the most important requirements is the ability to support oneself financially without relying on employment while residing in Italy.

To qualify, you will need to provide proof of sufficient income, and meet other specific financial and legal criteria set by Italian immigration authorities. This residence permit is especially appealing to those who want to enjoy a high quality of life in Italy without the pressure of seeking employment.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Financial requirements: Provide bank documents confirming the availability of funds exceeding:
    i. €31,000 for a single applicant.
    ii. €38,000 for a couple.
iii. An additional amount of €6,200 for each dependent child.
  2. Proof of Sufficient Means of Subsistence: Submit documentation proving adequate means to cover all living expenses while residing in Italy. Accepted forms of proof include: Retirement pensions, rental income from property, dividends from corporations, royalties, investment certificates, significant savings, or other financial sources. The local Questura (Police Office/Immigration Authorities) will evaluate whether the means provided are sufficient.
  3. Accommodation: Secure long-term housing in Italy, either through renting or purchasing a property.
  4. Health Insurance: Possess comprehensive medical insurance with a minimum annual coverage of €30,000 per person, valid in Italy and all Schengen member states.
